The cost of moving house is easier to plan when you can see every expense, who will pay it and when it falls due. A removals quote is one part of that picture. Packing supplies, a storage gap and the practical costs of getting everyone to the new home may sit outside it.
This worksheet helps you organise the moving-day side of a London house move. Keep property purchase costs, tenancy payments and ongoing household bills in a separate section of your wider budget, using the figures supplied by the relevant organisations.
How much does it cost to move house?
Start with a quote for your own inventory, addresses and requested help, then add the separate expenses that apply to you. A general average cannot tell you whether your move needs extra carrying help, a second delivery or a period in storage.
For JP Man & Van’s published booking options, see our man and van rates and confirm a quotation for your circumstances. Use this guide to build the surrounding budget; our guide to comparing moving quotes covers checking what each provider includes.
Build your moving budget in six rows
Copy these headings into a spreadsheet or notebook. Give each row columns for the expected total, confirmed total, amount already paid, balance, payment date and source of the figure. Mark an unknown amount as “awaiting quote”, rather than zero.
- Removal booking: the agreed vehicle, crew and transport work. Keep any quoted packing or furniture work within this row if it is already part of the total.
- Packing supplies: boxes, tape, protective materials and any separate delivery charge. Count what you already have before ordering more.
- Separate preparation: any agreed work booked with another provider, such as furniture preparation or cleaning. Record only services you actually intend to arrange.
- Access arrangements: any confirmed costs associated with your particular buildings or loading arrangements. Ask who arranges and pays for each item; do not assume it is either free or included.
- Storage and another journey: if relevant, include the storage period, any agreed extras and the later collection or delivery. Track ongoing storage separately from a one-off transport charge.
- Your own moving day: travel for household members, meals and any practical arrangements you choose to make for children or pets.
Separate the total cost from money still to pay
A payment schedule answers a different question from the overall budget. For each confirmed expense, subtract payments already made from the agreed total to show the outstanding balance. A deposit credited towards a booking belongs in the “already paid” column; adding it to the full booking total would count it twice.
Highlight payments due before moving day, on the day and afterwards. If two people share the expenses, note who is paying each provider and how you will record reimbursement. Keep receipts beside the relevant row so both people can see the same position.
Keep uncertain costs visible
Create a short “not yet confirmed” list beneath the worksheet. Examples might include an undecided storage period, an extra collection address or a building moving slot that has not been agreed. For each uncertainty, write the next action and the person you need to contact.
London flats can involve shared lifts, concierge arrangements and a carrying route through several doors. Get the details from the building manager and share them with the mover. Check current loading arrangements with the relevant authority for each address. Record any confirmed charge and whether it is already included in another row.
Keep a separate reserve for changes you may need to fund. Choose an amount that suits your circumstances rather than treating an arbitrary percentage as a guaranteed allowance. For a gap between homes, our moving into storage checklist helps you identify the extra arrangements to discuss.
Reduce the load before finalising the budget
Decide what will travel before requesting a revised quote. Remove donated or sold items from the inventory only once their collection is arranged. Avoid paying for boxes you do not need by counting cupboards and rooms systematically; our packing checklist can help with that preparation.
Update the worksheet whenever the plan changes, keeping the date beside each revision. After the move, replace estimates with actual payments and check any outstanding balances.
